Agentic commerce
Autonomous AI agents discovering, evaluating, and transacting on a customer's behalf — with new payment protocols emerging.
Agentic commerce is the emerging model where AI agents discover products, build carts, and complete purchases for a consumer. Landmark developments: the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe, and ChatGPT Instant Checkout (Sept 2025, starting with Etsy and Shopify merchants). Payment networks are racing to add trust/tokenisation (Mastercard Agent Pay, Visa initiatives, Google's AP2). Orium's published POV: agents are becoming the new gatekeepers of commerce, so enterprises must become 'agent-ready' by exposing structured, agent-readable endpoints.
"Agentic commerce is just chatbots on a website."
"Agentic commerce moves discovery and checkout from human UIs to agent-mediated transactions — the storefront becomes an API agents can trust."
"The winners will be whoever is easiest for an agent to understand, trust, and transact with."
