Stripe

What it is

A developer-first payments and financial-infrastructure platform — APIs plus prebuilt UI (Elements, Checkout), Billing, Radar (fraud), Connect. Joined the MACH Alliance in June 2023.

Where it sits in the stack

The payments/checkout layer beneath the commerce engine. Elements = embeddable UI for headless checkout; ships a commercetools Connect app.

Why enterprises care

Developer-first APIs plus prebuilt UI, 100+ global payment methods, and breadth (billing, fraud, marketplaces). Central to agentic payments via ACP (co-developed with OpenAI).

Business problem it solves

Removes the complexity of building/maintaining global payments, checkout, fraud, and billing — embeddable into any architecture.

Account-expansion opportunity

Payments modernisation and agentic-readiness (ACP) are credible expansion conversations as clients prepare for agent-mediated checkout.

What Darren should say

"Stripe is the payments layer, and it's now central to the agentic story — the Agentic Commerce Protocol it co-built with OpenAI is how agents will actually transact."

What NOT to overclaim

Don't claim Stripe is the only ACP backer; Mastercard, Visa, and Google's AP2 are parallel efforts. Don't overstate Stripe as a commerce engine.

Likely client objection

"Payments is a commodity" — not when agentic transactions need trust, tokenisation, and delegated authentication.

Interview-ready phrasing

"Payments stopped being plumbing the moment agents needed a trusted way to pay — that's the ACP conversation."
